29 May Vice Ganda stands up to Bullying. Go Vice!
JUAN SAYS: Let’s admit it, there are days when we have to think twice about the state of television in the country today (like this, click here). It has been a long tirade of giving jackets away, sometimes insufferable telenovela stories (although, we have ones we really enjoy watching teleseryes like THIS) but we rarely see local television shows actually stand up for something. Most of the time, shows are covered in fluff, maganda lang ang mga production number pero walang puso.
In other words, connecting with celebrities now in all their filtered glory is getting to become more difficult. Dati, ang dali maka-relate kay Juday kasi halos pareho kayo ng unretouched photos, pero ngayon, thanks to their sponsors, they’re like living and breathing dolls.
So it was extremely refreshing for someone as big as Vice Ganda to take a stand in Showtime’s AdVice Ganda portion. Sixteen year old audience member Pamela Reyes asked Vice’s advice on how to deal with bullies who called her ugly while also increasing her level of confidence.
Instead of going on a scripted tirade that some celebs are known for, Vice did the unthinkable, he stepped out of his comfort zone and joined in on the plight of Pamela. Instead of just shooting out a lengthy “how to be beautiful” speech, Vice took one step forward and showed Pamela that everyone feels insecure and bullied at times by taking off his make up ON NATIONAL TELEVISION with nothing but bravery. Vice, who is often the subject of online trolls, couldn’t care less about what would be said about him and instead went on to empathize with Pamela.
In a world where authenticity from celebrities is a rare sight, Vice’s take on this is very real. He unveiled himself like the famed Dove commercials and showed Pamela the bravery in accepting who you are. Vice continued his #ProudtoBeME empowerment through his Instagram.
Nagiisa ka lang Vice, maraming salamat saiyo! Sana maraming tumulad saiyo!
