20 Feb Much Ado About Manny
JUAN SAYS: Like many netizens who may have been watching our timeline feeds regarding the issue that Manny Pacquiao created during the last week, we too are tired of hearing one opinion after another, expressing their disgust over his statements. Juan chose to keep quiet. Just like what the parody account of Alma Moreno said on twitter:
Here is the thing, we too at JUAN have posted articles of support and sometimes otherwise on issues regarding the LGBT community, and in many ways we too have been lambasted by other die-hard advocates regarding our views. The same thing is happening with Manny Pacquiao today. Sadly, the very people who are fighting for acceptance are the very same people who antagonize the very people whom they are asking acceptance for.
Manny’s statements on his instagram posts are quite unpopular, maybe it hits a good minority to the face, but his posts on his instagram are his own personal beliefs. Yung na nga eh, we very well know that Manny is just that, a great boxer, period. Patulan ba?
If there is one thing good about this whole shebang, it is the fact that at the very least, Manny stood up for something, no matter how unpopular, no matter how bigoted or homophobic, no matter how stupid he may sound. He didn’t choose to keep quiet. Unlike many people we know who have been bullied to silence just because they think differently or believe differently.
It is true that posts like these, especially coming from someone who has greater influence to the vast majority are dangerous and may curve the belief system of others, but isn’t it what we are supposed to do. We air our arguments, our take on issues so other people may come to understand it from different points of view? No matter how many times “influential” people bombard us with their beliefs, the truth is, at the end of the day, we formulate our own opinions, our own stand based on what we know is the truth.
Yan tayo eh. Yan tayo!
Manny is a known Born Again Christian, and he is very vocal about his faith. It is our belief in JUAN that we should let him be. We may disagree with Manny, but we need not be disagreeable. Here is the thing, if you believe that what you are standing for is right and is the “gospel” truth, you would be so willing to die for it. Then we let you be. You don’t need to shove it down other people’s throats and expect them to side with you… hook, line and sinker, just because you lead a lifestyle that was once taboo in society. Being an advocate of the LGBT doesn’t make you right, always. The same is true with being a Christian, your faith doesn’t make you always right either.
Our beliefs are more than just talk, we have to live it. Many people don’t read (the bible or whatever text/mantra that guides our belief system). But many people surely watch our lives. Nakaka-turn off yun.
It is simple, if you are secured with your belief system, no matter how many bible quotes you see on other people’s instagram, be them popular or not, you won’t be affected nor offended.
