13 May Mt Pulag: Chasing the Sunrise
JUAN SAYS: Karen Tayao is a former broadcast journalist who set aside her career for motherhood. As her son, car racing champion Gabe Tayao Cabrera heads off to college in the US, Karen finds more time on her hands to dedicate to her first love(s): writing and travel.
She climbed Mt. Pulag recently, and here is her story:
Umakyat ako ng Mt. Pulag kamakailan. Kung hindi ninyo alam na 3rd highest mountain in the Philippines yon, ako rin. Nalaman ko lang when I was at the climbers’ briefing. But it was too late to back out. Pride rin siguro. I wasn’t about waste the almost 11-hour road trip to Benguet for nothing. After 10-hour trek to and from the summit, maga pa rin ang legs ko at patay na ang kuko ng paa ko. But no regrets. They say it’s a feat to conquer Mt. Pulag but it was Mt. Pulag who conquered me. It showed me I was physically, mentally and emotionally stronger than I ever dared to think. Yes! Life indeed begins at 40.
