29 Jan What if Disney Princess Were More Realistic?
JUAN SAYS: Every little girl, and the little girls at heart fell in love with the Disney Princesses of their generation. We all dreamed to be Cindy, Snow and yes, our children now want to be Elsa. But, Loryn Brantz, an Emmy Award-winning illustrator, noticed that there is something not exactly right with the characters that we have tried to emulate through the years. And we couldn’t agree more. These characters can be misconstrued as promoting outdated or even unhealthy gender images. In this series of illustration Brantz decided to give the princesses a more realistic waistline. She touched the hair too. It would be quite impossible to have free-flowing locks under ‘normal’ circumstances, don’t you think?
“As children we may not realize these images in the media affect us, but they definitely do,” Brantz told the Huffington Post. “Media outlets with the opportunity to change the way women are viewed and view themselves should start taking responsibility. It only took a couple nudges of a line to make those princesses’ waists less extreme, and they still looked beautiful and magical.“
JUAN SAYS: Let’s talk about waistlines shall we? The waif look is out. Corsets are no longer meant to be worn as an underwear. And powerful women (well, today’s equivalent of Queens and Princesses) have misplaced love handles too. And we can’t stop loving them even more. Women are more than just waif-lines and yeah, boobs!
JUAN SAYS: Nobody wakes up looking like they just came out of the salon. Nobody does. So let’s ‘humanize’ the princesses and see how they look on bad hair days.
